A Puppy for Christmas – Simone Luijten

My book review of “A Puppy for Christmas” written by Simone Luijten

In my view

This little story is about about a family living in the city and already early in the book some major changes are happening for the family. Monique is married and has two kids and at Sinterklaas eve, she discovers that her husband is not faithful. She decides to move out and live in a nearby village. Is the culture in a village different? Are the people living in a village different? The cliché ‘everybody knows everybody’ is of course part of the story. But will that fact stop Monique from the new adventure she stepped into? I loved the outcome, also a bit of a cliché but there are opposite cliché storylines so you never know exact what to expect. Maybe you are right, maybe you are wrong.

Style

The book reads in a quick pace and the choice of words is easy and the writing style is oke. Now and then a few grammar mistakes (double words) but it does not disturb the reading too much. This book is also perfectly written for reading on the go. Not a complex story line and not too many characters. And it is a short book you can read within a couple of days.

Characters

The main character in this story is Monique, she has an ordinary office job and is married to Thomas who has a well-paid job. They have a daughter named Sofie and a son named Tom. Mirjam is Monique’s sister and plays next to this family the other biggest role. Monique’s colleagues at work are Romee and Diederick and they are both a bit curious as well as Matthieu, who has not the character people think he has. When you meet Matthieu in the book at first, you think he is an ordinary rich man. But in fact, his character shows he is the sweetest character of the book. A heart of gold.
