Happy Feet (2006)

In my view…

The story of Happy Feet is a very lovely story that has also an important message: climate change and the danger for the wild animals it bring around the pole circles on our planet. But the storyline focuses on a king penguin who in contrast to his other fellow king penguin chickens, has not the skill of singing. Singing? Yes, according to this film a king penguin looks for his or her partner by ‘singing’ and dancing together.

The film is full of music, dancing, lovely choreography and meanwhile jokes are made. The story and its appurtenant drama guides you through the story. The little king penguin is a little adventurer. And every little adventure gets accompanied by music, dance and now and then a joke.

Filming

What I like about the film is that it uses very clear and different perspectives. Sometimes you have a closeup of one or a couple of those penguins. It zooms in and out depending on the part of the story. So it is easy to stay focused. Not only the music is something artistic that stands out. Also the images and shapes that are created throughout the story accompanied by music stand out. A heart is created to show the shape of love. Later on a triangle is created to show the form of leadership, who of the king penguins takes the lead?

Characters

The film starts with a lovely song, sung by the mother and father of the king pinguin chicken who is the main character of this film. It is quite typical: a king penguin who hatches later than the other youngsters and acts weird by starting to tap without really noticing. According to his dad it is not ‘penguin’. But as soon his mother is back from hunting fish, the first funny parts of the film start. Overall main characters ‘Mumble’ and ‘Gloria are so lovely created! Super cute! There are many more little penguin characters that play a role in Mumble’s life. But to not spoil some parts of the story by explaining there role, I leave it at those two main characters.
