My book review of “De Gids [NL] / The Guide [EN]” written by Margreet Maljers

In my view…

This book tells it’s story during the World War II. The year is 1939 and the main character Elja van Lier is only 18 years young. Family plays a major role in her daily life and she sees many new faces and get to know some of them better. Resistance, hiding and the ordinary person who is more and more suffering by the war.

The story mainly takes place in and around Alkmaar, visits outside the city and a trip to Amsterdam is also sometimes covered. What I also particularly like about the book is that it has not described the end of the war. But the book does shut in a special way.
The author writes so, that you follow all the thoughts and conversations of the characters. Conspiracy theories, betrayal, different characters, different ways and different interests. It is quite interesting about and gi

ves you an idea of how people lived in those days. It looks real even though this is a historical novel. This makes the book however very appreciated by me . Despite the note that I do think it was reading a little bit slower than I am used to at the moment and expecting.

This book is a must for anyone who loves to read with a historic flavor at a leisurely pace.

I am not telling about the story – never do in my book reviews – you have to read the book yourself and make your own opinion. I hope you like the book too. It is worth to read it!

Greetings by Sophie
