My review of ‘The Selection’ written by Kiera Cass
In my view
The story is about America Singer who takes part in a selection. Not just a selection as in a competition to win something, a prize. But ‘The Selection’ is about the contest of a prince finding his princess, future wife, future queen among the people of his country. It is a contest because it is a tradition already for a couple of generations of the royal family. It’s the way his father – the King – met his mother – the Queen – a bit over twenty years ago. Now it is prince Maxon’s turn and America Singer got his attention, and the other 34 selected girls too. Beautiful dresses, jealousy, gossip, danger, television appearances or just daily business at the palace is the main part of the story. It is interesting how big this fantasy can be and how the people of the country named Illéa are defined by social ranks. Their jobs and chance of survival and not feeling hungry are defined by the social ranks. This is one thing that struck me though. A divided an unequal social environment which is not fixed in this sequel. Though there is a core message between the lines: It does not matter where you come from or what your skills are. It does matter that you fight fairly for what you want to achieve. That is the main part of the story; entwined around love.
Style
The writing style was nice, in a good pace but now and then some words or grammar distracted me and then I had to read the sentence more than once to understand completely what I was reading. I think this has to do with the difference between English and American English and that I am not a native in English. The beginning of the book felt a bit slow but halfway the story and toward the end of this first sequel Writing or spelling, quick or slow pace, enough words etc…
Characters
The main character is America Singer and her profession is quite obvious: she is an entertainer, a musician, mainly a singer. Her family, the royal family, the maids and the other Selection girls play quite an equal role. Though not everyone has the same social background. In this sequel there will probably be someone you can relate to. And I am curious for how the characters develop in the next sequels of this series.
