Game | Star Chef (2014)

My game review of ‘Star Chef: Cooking & Restaurant Game’ published by 99Games Online Pvt. Limited in 2014 and on Steam since 2019.

In my view

The game ‘Star Chef: Cooking & Restaurant Game’ is an online free game available on Steam what I played for a couple of months nearly every day when I gamed on Steam. And it exists now for already ten years! Wow I wonder who plays this already from the beginning. If you are familiar with restaurant games such as Diner Dash, this game is quite different. In Star Chef you follow a little story but you have the opportunity to upgrade your restaurant and visit neighbouring ones as well as visiting neighbouring buildings or sales vans to buy your ingredients. It’s an all-click-game so no use of the keyboard is needed. I was soon done with all my tasks within ten minutes and eventually I played this game for a bit over 9 hours in total in a time span of a couple of months.

I played this game, among other games, during the pandemic when I was discovering and trying out several games. Soon after the release of this game, its follow-up is released in 2021 and I continued with that game. A review of Star Chef 2 will be written soon too!

Style

I find the graphics of this first version of Star Chef quite okay. It is not cute like the chibi style, nor realistic, nor platform, nor really 2D like the example Diner Dash. I prefer drawn ones, just like drawn comics and their series, above the (semi)3D-animated versions. Wall art is often not 3D animated either in my opinion. Could be, but what we draw ourselves and therefor relate to is more often 2D than 3D-like.

Experience

The game is less challenging than it’s competitors like Diner Dash. There is not rush behind the dishes, there is no rush behind anything and lots of stuff is also promoted as in-game buying, which I do not like. The images that are provided by the publisher and displayed on the Steam page are not even close to what I achieved in a couple of hours playing. I was far behind and that’s also because everything just takes a lot of time. These click-all-games always take a short time in the moment itself but a lot of time to over the timeline to eventually significantly progress.

The game is a fun small game to play for a while. It is not significant standing out compared to other games and it is not – as far as I have experienced – crossdevice so you can play on your pc/laptop or on your mobile phone meanwhile when you’re travelling. That’s a bit of a pity then.
